GUIDE 01 · PROCUREMENT

How to Prepare an Optical Component RFQ

A useful request for quotation defines what the component must do, how it fits the assembly and how the finished part will be accepted. The drawing, quantity and operating conditions should describe the same project.

1. Identify the drawing and optical function

Attach the current dimensioned drawing and state its revision. Identify the component type, optical path, critical dimensions, reference surfaces and clear aperture. For lenses and domes, include radii and thickness. For prisms, identify the faces and angles. Mark requirements that are still open.

2. Define optical and coating conditions

State the operating wavelength range, material preference, surface quality, surface figure and relevant dimensional tolerances. For coatings, include the coated faces, angle of incidence, polarization and transmission or reflection targets. For filters, add the passband and blocking ranges.

3. Include quantity, acceptance and timing

Separate prototype quantity from expected production demand. Include your requested delivery date, inspection documents and acceptance conditions. Ask the quotation to identify any exceptions or undecided requirements, then confirm the drawing revision before placing the order.

GUIDE 02 · SPECIFICATION

What to Include When Discussing Optical Materials

Material selection is an application decision. If your drawing already specifies a material and grade, include both. If it does not, describe the operating wavelength, environment and mechanical constraints so the requirement can be reviewed.

Define the wavelength and optical requirement

Provide the wavelength range and transmission requirement for the finished component, including the coating where relevant. State any refractive index, dispersion or homogeneity requirement specified by the optical design. Avoid substituting a material name without checking the design requirements.

Describe the operating and mounting conditions

Include temperature range, environmental exposure, mounting arrangement, component size and thickness. For protective windows and domes, explain the interface and any pressure or mechanical constraints. Share cleaning and handling restrictions if they affect the choice.

Confirm availability and acceptance

Ask for material availability, any proposed substitution and the documentation required for your order. Material identity, dimensions, coating and schedule should be confirmed together. Positive Optics reviews material requirements as part of the custom component enquiry.

GUIDE 03 · COATING

How to Specify an Optical Coating Request

A coating name alone is not a complete specification. Define the required spectral behavior and the conditions under which it must be achieved. Include the substrate and the surfaces to coat.

Describe the required performance

For anti-reflection requirements, state the wavelength band and allowed reflection or required transmission. For mirrors, define reflectance over the operating band. For filters, include band edges, bandwidth, transmission and blocking targets. A target curve is useful when its units and limits are clear.

Provide the operating conditions

Specify angle of incidence, angular spread, polarization and temperature. For laser use, include wavelength, power or pulse conditions, beam size and any damage test requirement. Identify the surfaces to coat and the surfaces that must remain uncoated.

Agree measurement and inspection conditions

Confirm the spectral limits, measurement conditions, inspection documentation and environmental requirements with the quotation. Clearly distinguish a target from a confirmed acceptance criterion. Coating feasibility is reviewed against the geometry, substrate and application.
